Prof. Hassan introduced two restorative techniques; both were meant to control the detrimental effects of composite resin polymerization shrinkage. He introduced the first in 1987 as a modification to the then-commonly used incremental placement technique which places successive horizontal increments on the gingival wall to fill the proximal box of Class II. The modified technique advocates building the missing proximal wall first by placing the first composite increment on the gingival wall and inner surface of the matrix band. Prof. Hassan introduced the second in 2005 as a modification to the then-widely used “solid” horizontal incremental technique which was utilized for restoring large Class I cavities. The proposed “split-increment horizontal placement” technique uses successive horizontal split-increments to restore occlusal cavities.
